McDonald’s Acts As A Catalyst In Promoting Obesity

McDonald's

Obesity toll increases with the consumption of McDonald’s fast food.

The obesity toll in increasing on a rampant pace across the globe, the United States itself has been termed as the fattest country where almost one third of individuals fall under the obese category. This issue is not merely a matter of personal opinion regarding the various sizes and accepting the different body types and shapes but obesity is about unhealthy lifestyle and eating patterns. The catalysts who perpetuate this cause are the ones retailing food items that are loaded with salt, sugar and fat. These three agents together can cause major diseases like stroke, cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc. according to a research conducted, these disease have killed almost 1.4 million individuals per annum in the United States.

Obesity is not the major cause that gives birth to diseases but it is considered to be the leading cause. The repercussion on health care is tremendous. As per the estimates, the cost of obesity in the United States is $147-$210 billion dollars per annum.

So what promotes obesity? The answer is simple, the things that cause obesity are fatty fast food, sugar based drinks and no exercise. Health care department claims that eating fast food is equally bad as smoking cigarettes. Irrespective of this fast food giants like McDonald’s Corporation and Burger King do not take any responsibility for the health related repercussions. These companies endorse their fast food that results in obesity calling it a matter of choice.

According to nutritionist, the companies add subatnces that cause addiction similar to what cigarettes do.  These substances in return stop the consumers from making healthy choices and consume unhealthy food. McDonald’s menu has a wide array of unhealthy food that promotes obesity. It will not be wrong to say that fast food is a “major public health hazard”

According to the Organic Consumer’s Association, “If one considers some typical modern foods-hamburgers laden with growth hormones, vegetables laced with pesticides, soft drinks full of refined sugar, and foods too numerous to mention whose colour and taste have been artificially enhanced by manufactured chemicals-one could easily imagine that the goal of the global food system is simply to provide the global health care system with more customers.”

There is nothing more important than the human life. Fast food giants need to understand this better. In no way we are saying to put an end to their business but they can actually opt for healthier options that will not take the lives on consumers.
